This painting was created as a beginning to a landscape series. In tradition with my love of mythology, I chose to title it The Swan Maiden
in reference to the Irish legend of a maiden, Dierdre, and her relentless pursuit by king Conchobor. The story has many versions, the most famous of which is titled "Deirdre and Naisi" in "The Ulster Cycle" collection of tales. The tragic story ends with the death of her lover, Naisi, and her sacrifice of life to escape the king. The lovers become reincarnated as swans, which is the traditional celtic symbol of death and rebirth.
